“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far it is possible to go.” — T.S. Eliot
It was an honor to be one of the three finalists being considered to represent Dallas in the Sendai Half Marathon. I was disappointed when I received the news that I was not chosen, but I was not discouraged. The whole process of applying was a huge risk for me. Being fast was an important factor in being chosen, but this was not the only quality that the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth was looking for. They were also looking for a good ambassador of Dallas in Japan. This was an enormous step outside of my comfort zone. When I go to a race, I am focused on one thing, the race. The thought of going to Japan, as an ambassador of Dallas and part of Team Dallas in a half marathon was a little overwhelming at first. To be honest, I was not exactly sure what that meant, or what they were looking for. A public speaker? A lot of connections? The most educated? The best ideas? But now, after the interview and the conversation with the Chairman of the Dallas-Sendai Committee, I have a better understanding of what it will take to be chosen for Sendai, and I have no doubt that I can do it.
